Johann Joachim Quantz was not only a prolific composer, but a virtuoso flutist, authoritative scholar, meticulous teacher, and a builder of fine flutes.  In 1714, Quantz joined the musical entourage of Frederick the Great of Prussia, where the majority of his compositions were written. Writing 300 flute concertos and many flute sonatas, of which the majority were never published, Quantz became one of the richest musicians of his day.  While at the court, Quantz also wrote his Essay on flute-playing (1752), which was less of a flute tutor than a survey of musical taste and execution on various instruments.  His essay became and has remained the most widely known instrumental method of the 18th century.  Sonata No. 277 is representative of Quantz’s move towards the classical style, with elements of galant charm and the fiery passion of Sturm und Drang.      Jason Moy
