Stylistically complex and technically daunting, these Etudes (2012) each depict a wildly different character and require a totally different state of mind – from the jazzy and horrifically syncopated “Snakes and ladders”, to the stillness and dark anger of “Funeral March” and the shimmering luminosity and fluidity of “Sundrops over windy water.” For Dorman, 21st century globalization means the conversation of various musical styles, recalling Bach, Art Tatum, Messiaen, Lutoslawski, Ravel, Sweelinck and Gershwin.
