Waltz from the ballet Cinderella, Sergei Prokofiev, arranged by Mikhail Fikhtengolts

One of my favorite works from “Music from the Suitcase: A Collection of Russian Miniatures,” is Sergei Prokofiev’s Waltz from his ballet, Cinderella. There are many versions of this famous fairytale, but Prokofiev’s version (and in particular the Waltz in this arrangement for violin and piano) captures the darker undertones that might be absent in a more Disney-fied version of the story, while maintaining a palpable sense of magic. The music still reflects the fantastical narrative, but in the middle of it all, grittiness creeps into the texture, foreboding a grimmer reality.  Prokofiev himself originally arranged this version of the Waltz for solo piano. Later, the Russian violinist, Mikhail Fikhtengolts arranged that version for violin and piano.      Notes by Yevgeny Kutik and Timothy Bozarth
