Auf einer Burg (In a Fortress)

Fallen asleep on his watch

up there is the old knight,

yonder rain showers are falling,

and the forest rustles through the iron bars.

Beard and hair have grown into one,

and chest and ruffled collar have turned to stone,

he has been sitting for many hundreds of years

up there in silent hermitage.

Outside it is quiet and peaceful,

all have moved into the valley,

forest birds sing lonely

in the empty window arches.

A wedding party passes by below

on the Rhine in the sunshine,

musicians play merrily,

and the fair bride, who is weeping.
