Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Pezzo Capriccioso, Op. 62 is not a capricious piece, despite its title. The piece is a passionate, lyrical lament with the exception of a very quick, short, and devilishly difficult middle and end section. Tchaikovsky wrote this piece through his growing grief for his friend, Nikolay Kondratyev, whose health was in rapid decline. This piece was published in the same year as Tchaikovsky’s prestigious Symphony No. 5 in E minor, which shares many of this piece’s anguish and heartache.Brannon Cho
