Lili Boulanger was a prolific and successful composer during her short life. Her reputation has been eclipsed by that of her older sister Nadia Boulanger who was a renowned composer, teacher, and conductor. Lili was only five years old when she began attending compositions classes at the Paris Conservatoire with her sister. She later studied with Georges Caussade and Paul Vidal. In 1913 Lili became the first woman to win the Prix de Rome; the most prestigious award in composition. Lili's style of composition is characteristic of French music of that period with subtle use of chromaticism and contrapuntal textures. Deux morceaux (2 Pieces) for violin and piano were not composed as a set although they are published together. Nocturne was written in 1911, and Cortège in 1914.     Veronique Mathieu
