This work is one of seven toccatas that Bach composed between 1706 and 1710. These toccatas were composed in the early phase of Bach’s life; they hold an important and prominent place in pianists’ repertoire. Toccatas are multi-sectional works written in a rhapsodic and improvisatory style, and they explore the possibilities of virtuosic keyboard playing. This toccata in E minor is a four section work: A free form introduction, Un poco allegro, Adagio, and a fugue. Katsura Tanikawa
