Sonata in G Major, Hob. XVI: 40 (7’)           Haydn

Haydn’s orchestra and chamber works established the harmonic and structural language that today defines musical classicism, serving as models for subsequent generations of composers. Equally ground-breaking were the piano sonatas, as many of them perhaps do not conform to the neat academic descriptions of typical classical structural and tonal order. Today’s work of 1784 is an example of Haydn’s galant style at its best, with an elegant Theme and Variations as a first movement followed by a humorous Presto. It was written while Haydn was still enjoying the patronage of the Esterházy household, shortly after the composer’s befriending of Mozart.     Spencer Myer
