Boccherini was a virtuoso cellist who wrote mostly for his own instrument, and a host of wonderful chamber music for strings, which unfortunately does not get performed as often as deserved. The Sonata in A major is a perfect example of how Boccherini combined lightness, charm and virtuosity. The original manuscript contains the solo cello line, and a basso continuo line underneath it. Many modern editions contain florid realizations of the continuo part, which suggest an influence of the Romantic school.   The opening Adagio is characterized by embellishments in the cello part, and is in binary form with a mini cadenza towards the end. The second movement makes use of barriolage and rapid passages of 32nd notes. The final movement Affetuoso has the feel of a minuet, but does not contain a trio.       Elias Goldstein
