Paganini's caprices are, alongside the Bach Sonatas and Partitas, the foundation of the modern solo violin repertoire. In adapting these masterworks, Szymanowski generally leaves the violin part almost untouched, using the ingenious piano part to give a completely new meaning to each caprice, especially in the 20th where an originally sweet and unassuming melody becomes eerily haunting. He also finds a way to intensify the trio section's rhythmic and harmonic tension through fantastic use of the piano's register and chordal capacities.      Brendan Conway
