Ständchen (‘Serenade’)
Carry on, carry on, but softly my child, wake no one from sleep.
Hardly murmurs the brook, hardly trembles the wind,
or a leaf on the bushes and hedges.
Therefore, quietly, my Maiden, that nothing stirs,
only quietly lay your hand on the latch.
With treading, treading like elves so gently,
hop over the flowers.
Fly easily out in the moonlit night to me,
slip out in the garden.
The flowers slumber on the rippling creek,
scented in sleeping, only love is awake.
Sit down here in the mysterious dusk under the linden trees.
The nightingale above our heads shall dream of our kisses.
And the rose, when she wakes in the morning,
glows from the delights of the night.
Thanks to you!
Once I, the one who delighted in freedom, held the amethyst cup
And you blessed the drink.
Thanks to you!
And exorcised the evil ones therein,
Until I, as I had ever been,
Holy, holy on your heart, I sank.
Thanks to you!
