Written in 1959, Prologue was intended to be Part One of a four-part orchestral work called The Drama. Part Two, Comedy, was actually written in 1947, and performed here by the Fresno Philharmonic on October 20, 1960, Paul Vermel conducting. After the performance, Maestro Vermel turned to the audience, and made the observation that some pieces of modern music proved challenging to listeners upon first hearing, and for the sake of their edification, Fresno would play it again, which they did.

This piece proved challenging not just for the audience, but for the orchestra as well. There are problems in cohesion and pitch accuracy. Leplin's music is complicated, and even the San Francisco Symphony has at times had difficulty expressing the composer's musical intentions, if not of capturing the his moods and feelings, which have always met with better success.
