Music and Transfiguration

"Art Has No Limits"

I was reminded today about a quote by Beethoven:

The true artist is not proud, he unfortunately sees that art has no limits; he feels darkly how far he is from the goal; and though he may be admired by others, he is sad not to have reached that point to which his better genius only appears as a distant, guiding sun.

It's mind-boggling to think just how vast the subject of music is. Even in just classical music you've got several centuries of history, theoretical topics such as harmony and counterpoint practically have no limits, and then there's just the staggering amount of literature. I honestly think you could study music your entire life and never learn all its secrets. But that is what keeps us going. We may never learn all those secrets, but it's something to shoot for. I find this a useful quote to keep handy. It's a helpful reminder to know that even Beethoven felt he was far from the goal.
