From
his earliest days as a prodigy in Bonn, Beethoven's ambition had been to travel
to Vienna to take lessons with Mozart. Mozart agreed to take Beethoven as a student, although between the
illness of Beethoven's mother—which forced his return to Bonn—and Mozart's
death in 1791, the lessons never took place.
Beethoven's
admiration for Mozart's music remained undimmed for the rest of his life. In
1798 he published the 12 Variations for Cello and Piano which appear on today's
program. They are based on Papageno's
aria "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen" from The Magic Flute. In 1802 Beethoven
published a set of 7 variations—again for cello and piano—on a duet between
Papageno and Pamina, "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen." Wendy Law
