Sonata for Flute Solo in a minor, Wq132 Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach
Adagio;
Allegro
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was the second of J.S.
Bach's sons and possibly the one whose music has found the most enduring
popularity over the last two centuries. On completion of his studies he entered
the service of Frederick the Great at the Berlin court, where he stayed for
almost thirty years. Frederick was a flute player himself and C.P.E. Bach's
duties included the composition of music for his flute-playing sovereign to
perform.
The
Sonata in a minor was composed in 1758. It begins with a Poco adagio featuring a sustained melody which is much ornamented.
This is followed by two succeeding Allegros
admirably displaying the dexterity and virtuosity of the flutist. Colleen Matheu
