Ludwig van Beethoven’s 7 Variations on Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen, WoO 46 is a set of short variations on the theme from the song of the same title from Mozart’s opera, Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute). The song is a playful, romantic duet between two leading characters, Pamina and Papageno. Beethoven arranges this into a duet between the cello and piano, with most of the variations maintaining their lightheartedness and innocence. The exceptions are the fourth and sixth variations; the fourth is dark and brooding, while the sixth is a slow, expressive love duet between the cello and piano. The piece ends in typical Beethoven fashion with a calming-down and then a surprise to make listeners jump out of their seats.     Brannon Cho
