Requiebros in D Major      Gaspar Cassadó

The Spaniard Gaspar Cassadó was a virtuoso cellist who enjoyed a world-wide solo career and performed with such luminaries as Menuhin and Rubinstein. He studied with the renowned Pablo Casals in Paris from1908 to 1914 and in gratitude, dedicated his Requiebros to Casals.  In Spanish, requiebros means "flirtation," "memories" or "compliments," depending on the context.  This work is filled with markings such as "con anima" and "con passione" which demonstrate Cassadó's strong emotional attachment to his years with Casals.  The work has a very strong Spanish flavor with lots of rubato, thirty-second-note flourishes, and recitative.    Natasha Farny
