Adagio e Tarantella              Ernesto Cavallini

Cavallini was himself a veritable Paganini on the clarinet. He was a product of the 'Old School' tradition, performing on a 6-keyed clarinet with the reed placed on top. The normal clarinet at the time had up to 13 keys and was performed with the reed facing in the downward position as it is today. While Cavallini was the principal clarinetist at La Scala, Verdi wrote the famous clarinet solos in his operas "Rigoletto" and "La Forza del destino" for him.    Pamela Coats
