A Woman is a Sometime Thing
My Man’s Gone Now
I’ve Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’
Bess, You is My Woman Now
It Ain’t Necessarily So

George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess was composed in 1934. The opera is based on DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy and was premiered in New York City on September 30, 1935. Porgy and Bess tells the story of Porgy, a disabled beggar living in Catfish Row of Charleston, South Carolina. Porgy attempts to rescue the woman he loves, Bess, from her violent and possessive lover, Crown, and Sportin' Life, her drug dealer. The confluence of jazz, spirituals, and Western art music make Gershwin’s masterpiece an excellent candidate for brass transcription, and Jack Gale’s version is ideal, especially in the way he utilizes each instrument’s voice and timbre to represent different characters.      Seraph Brass
