Composed in 1903, Alfredo Casella's Barcarola e Scherzo was dedicated to flutist Philippe Gaubert, whom the composer met at the Paris Conservatory. Casella studied and taught piano there, though he spent most of his later career in his native Italy. The Barcarola, traditionally a Venetian gondola song, features lilting triplets suggesting a boat in the water. The whirlwind Scherzo and its return frame a lively trio. Kristin Paxinos
