From his lush early works to his 1947 essay “Brahms the Progressive”, Arnold Schoenberg was a composer firmly rooted in the expressive vocabulary of the nineteenth century. By the time Schoenberg composed these Six Little Piano Pieces, he had abandoned tonal harmony and rejected the excesses of late-Romantic music. However, he continued to employ the gestures and devices of earlier eras, and one can hear throughout this brief set the same yearning leaps and questioning non-resolutions in which a composer like Brahms would have felt at home.       Evan Mitchell
