since 1973. His 12 New Etudes for Piano garnered
the 1988 Pulitzer Prize in Music. Hymné
à l'amour('Hymn of Love') is
the twelfth etude from the set. It
exploits the colorful use of contrasting timbres and orchestral sonorities by setting
richly complex, jazz-inflected chord progressions against a distant,
plainchant-like ostinato figuration that subsides with each complete
