Hymne à l'Amour from 12 New Etudes for Piano       William Bolcom

The career of William Bolcom has led him from the West Coast to Paris and to New York.  He has been teaching at the University of Michigan since 1973.  His 12 New Etudes for Piano garnered the 1988 Pulitzer Prize in Music.  Hymné à l'amour('Hymn of Love') is the twelfth etude from the set.  It exploits the colorful use of contrasting timbres and orchestral sonorities by setting richly complex, jazz-inflected chord progressions against a distant, plainchant-like ostinato figuration that subsides with each complete presentation of the hymn.    Heidi Louise Williams
