The title Ballade was first used for a piano piece by
Chopin in 1836. Eventually he would compose four such works, in which the form
is based on thematic development organized in a rather free, rhapsodic manner.
Unlike Chopin's Ballades, Brahms' examples feature clear formal structures. Cast
in an overall three-part (ABA) structure, Brahm's Ballades feature divisions
within their larger sections.
Composed
during the summer of 1854, the Four Ballades, Op. 10, were published in 1856 and
are dedicated to lifelong friend Julius Otto Grimm. Today, the final ballade of the set, marked Andante con moto, will be played.
