from 1903 are musical "stamps" from exotic locales around the world. Pagodes was inspired by Javanese gamelan
orchestras which Debussy heard at the Paris International Exposition.
Pentatonic themes help to capture the shimmer of oriental gongs. La Soirée dans Grenadepictures a warm night in Grenada; a habanera rhythm is heard throughout the movement. Jardins sous la pluiebegins in the middle of a rain shower
in Paris. When the rain subsides, a French nursery song is
