Manuel de Falla's
large-scale piano fantasy, Fantasia Baetica, marks a departure from his
impressionistic and folkloristic style, towards a new, edgier, modern and
virtuosic piano writing. "Baetica" is
the ancient Roman name for Andalucia, and this is the composer's last work in
the Andalusian idiom. Its premier
performance was given in 1919 by the great Polish pianist Artur Rubenstein, who
commissioned the work, and to whom it is dedicated. Jason Cutmore
