American Nocturne I, from Pieces of Night  Play

Musician's or Publisher's Notes

The first nocturne ("turmoil") opens with a statement of materials and textures followed by a "development" leading to a lullaby, a rest that changes into a pounding nightmare before collapsing into a thick, rolling texture.  Out of this texture appears an ascending passage that soars to the piano's highest notes and then drifts into a sweet chorale-like section before introducing the second lullaby.  The nocturne ends with a quit reprise of the opening sounds.

I think a more appropriate title would be Pieces of a Nightmare. UGH. NO melodious content at all, just pure pianist pugilism. The piano sure file charges for assualt and battery.

LOL, I agree with Burtto. It actually scared me...

I am not amused by "kittykaz" or "Burtto" comments. The piece is supposed to be a "nightmare". It is a commentary on the American involvement in Vietnam. This is an upsetting work but also very moving. The lullabies are quite beautiful AND melodious. Maybe "kittykaz" and "Burtto" should stick to listening to Pachelbel's "Canon".
