Sonate pour le Pianoforte, Op. 15               Carl Ludvig Lithander

Allegro moderato; Adagio patetico; Menuetto non Allegro con espressione; Rondo

Carl Ludvig Lithander (1773 - 1843) counts among the most prominent Finnish piano composers of the classical period. He was born to a Finnish family living in Estonia. Later he lived in Stockholm, London and Greifswald.

Sonate pour le Pianoforte in f-sharp minor was published in 1822 in Germany. It is dedicated to the Danish lord chamberlain and music lover Adam Wilhelm Hauch. It is the second of Lithander´s two piano sonatas.

The first movement resembles the music by Muzio Clementi and the second movement, Adagio patetico, is similar to the slow movement of the Sonata op.13 "Pathétique" by Ludwig van Beethoven.  The third movement wavers between a minuet and a waltz. The  final movement ends with a slow coda that looks back to the second movement.        Elisa Järvi
