Rameau wrote his Nouvelles Suites de Pièces de Clavecin in 1726-7. This collection of pieces forms two large suites, in A minor and in G Major. The Gavotte with its variations is the final piece in the A minor suite. The slow, calm theme of the gavotte is followed by 6 virtuosic variations, which explore the different technical methods of the instrument – scales, repeated notes, and use of the whole range of the Baroque keyboard.
