Musician's or Publisher's Notes
In the middle of the concert program, we find Béla Bartók and Domenico Scarlatti, two composers stylistically and geographically distant but, nonetheless, connected to Brazilian music in direct and indirect ways. Although born in Italy, Scarlatti worked for eight years in Portugal and almost thirty years in Spain. His affinity with Lusitanian and Hispanic music is evident in many of his solo keyboard sonatas, especially in the three selections on today’s program. Such features were naturally adopted by Brazilian composers later on, since Brazil had been Portugal’s largest colony for four centuries until its declaration of independence in 1822. Victor Cayres
