Like many of his other piano works, Schumann’s Sonata in G minor was written for Clara to perform. He worked on it at the same time as he was composing his first sonata, Op.11 and the Fantasy, Op.17. The second movement is based on his own Lied “Im Herbste”. The present Rondo finale was written at Clara’s request for a less demanding movement than the original. The four movements were written in stages over an extended period of time (1833-38), and were assembled into one complete sonata, published in 1839. Luba Poliak
