Sonata No. 5 in F-sharp Major, Op. 53         Alexander Scriabin

The development of Scriabin's voice as a composer can be followed in his piano sonatas: the earliest are composed in a conventional late-Romantic style and show the influence of Chopin and sometimes Franz Liszt, but the later ones move into new, original territory.

Sonata No. 5, completed in 1907, falls in the middle of the pack.  It is in one continuous movement showing growth away from tradition, but does not yet fully embrace the atonal freedom of Scriabin's last sonatas. He prefaces Sonata No. 5 with four lines from a poem of his own:

I call you to life, secret longings!
You that have been drowned in the dark depths
Of the creative spirit, you fearing
Embryos of life, to you I bring boldness.
