Röselein, Röselein ("Little Rose"), the sixth song of Schumann's 6 Gesange, op. 89, sets a poem by von der Neun. The narrator of the poem questions why a rose has its thorns and recalls a dream of a thornless rose. Schumann's setting begins in A minor with a four measure quasi-recitative for the voice.  After a pause on a half cadence, the music resumes in the tonic major and with the song's principal melodic figure in the piano. When the narrator recounts his dream, Schumann moves to key of C major, the relative major of the opening A minor recitative. The key of A major returns for the final section before a brief coda brings this charming song to an end.    Joseph DuBose
