Five Impressions of a Holiday              Eugene Goossens

In the Hills; By the Rivers; The Water Wheel; The Village Church; At the Fair

British born Eugene Goossens achieved great success as both a composer and a conductor. After starting his career as a violinist, Goossens was appointed the first chief conductor of the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra. He subsequently served as conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony and of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, where he is credited with beginning plans on the Sydney Opera House.

As a composer, Goossens was heavily influenced by French Impressionism, and especially loved the music of Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc. Five Impressions of a Holiday, written early in his career, certainly reflects this influence. Each of the five movements invokes a particular character and setting through the use of sweeping gestures, instrumental tone colors and expanded harmonies.    Thomas Cuffari
