Romanian Folk dances, Sz 56                    Béla Bartók

Hungarian composer and pianist Bela Bartok (1881-1945) is considered one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century. Bartok shared with his friend Zoltan Kodaly a passion for ethnomusicology and both composers travelled  Europe's countryside equipped with a tape recorder and collected thousands of folk tunes. Bartok's music was invigorated by the themes, modes and rhythmic patterns of these folk music traditions. One piece inspired by his studies, the Romanian Folkdances from Hungary, is one of his most performed compositions. This work was originally written for solo piano and has been transcribed numerous times including this arrangement for violin and piano.    Michael Cansfield
