The penultimate work in a collection of 24 caprices, this miniature is a display of vibrant color as well as technical virtuosity. Paganini himself was a child prodigy, widely known for his incredible technical brilliance, and he wrote this set of études/caprices to challenge every aspect of violin technique. Written in the early 19th century, these pieces were dedicated not to a specific person but “to the Artists.” Caprice No. 23 in particular begins and ends with a joyous fanfare of octaves in E flat major, sandwiching a raucously intense g minor middle section.      Stella Chen
