Robert Muczynski was a Chicago-based composer, well-known for his chamber music and piano works.  He studied composition with Alexander Tcherepnin and piano with Walter Knupfer at DePaul University.  Using many traditional techniques to portray abstract concepts, his compositions are often concise and descriptive.

Maverick Pieces, Op.37 is a set of twelve short character pieces composed in 1977.  One can hear influence from Bartok and Stravinsky in many of his piano works.  In the first piece, the constant switch between duple and triple meter creates an angular dance feeling.  As a contrast, the second piece is expressive and lyrical in a multi-layered texture. The fifth piece explores the characteristics of a toccata. The offbeat accents and the continuous sixteenth notes create an irresistible rhythmic drive.   Clara Yang
