Bartolomé de Selma y Salaverdewas a Spanish bassoon player with enough international reputation to have his music published in Venice and enough virtuosity to play his own music. His music contains some of the 17th century’s most intricate bass parts. His Canzon highlights a popular form centered around the characteristic rhythm that opens the piece.
