Composers would often find musical inspiration from literary works. Claude Debussy, on the other hand, was deeply inspired by pictures and other visual aspects, i.e. colors, atmospheres, etc. Therefore, it is only natural that he wrote two books of musical images. Water was one of the favorite subjects of Impressionists; Reflet dans l’eau (Reflections in the water) is one of Debussy’s most famous pieces in which he depicts musically various reflected images. Hommage à Rameau is in the style of a sarabande, a stately Baroque dance movement, Debussy’s nod to the revered French composer. Finally, Mouvement is a musical translation of various different movements created sonically, with Debussy’s instruction for “whimsical but precise lightness”.       Esther Park
