I.   Prelude
II.  Almand
III. Corante
IV. Saraband

In the keyboard music of Henry Purcell, one hears a strong influence of his operatic writing. (Operas such as Dido and Aeneas and The Fairy Queen are still popular today.) The Suite in G Minor opens with a brief Prelude which establishes the key, and is followed by the highly dissonant and expressive Almand. The Corant is lively and features dotted rhythms in the French style, while the Saraband (a dance which originated in Central America as something quite sensual and animated) brings the suite to a solemn and stately close.      Bryan Wagorn
