Im Frühling

Quiet I sit on the hill’s slope,
The sky is so clear,
The little breeze plays in the green valley,
Where I was at spring’s first light
Once, ah, so happy I was;

Where I at her side went
So trusting and close,
And deep in the dark rock spring
The beautiful sky, blue and bright,
And I saw her in the sky.

See how colorful spring already
From buds and blossoms looks out!
Not all the blossoms are the same to me,
I like best to pick from the branch,
From which she has picked.

Then all is how it was then,
The flowers, the field,
The sun shines no less bright,
No less friendly swims in the brook
The blue sky’s image.

Only desire and illusion change,
Joy and quarrels alternate,
The happiness of love flies away,
And only the love stays behind,
The love and ah, the sorrow!

O if only I were a little bird
There on the meadow slope!
Then I would stay on the branches here,
And sing a sweet song of her,
The whole summer long.
