Pantcho Vladigerov (1899-1978) is the most
famous Bulgarian composer of his generation.
His Bulgarian Rhapsody Vardarfor violin and piano and his opera Tzar Kaloian are well-known and
performed on a regular basis throughout Bulgaria.
His music was admired by many great composers of the twentieth century,
including Richard Strauss, Dimitri Shostakovich, and Aram Khachaturian. Famous performers of his works include
Herbert von Karajan, David Oistrach, and Alexis Weissenberg. The main focus of Vladigerov's compositional
style is to combine trends in Western music with Bulgarian folkloric
traditions. His minature for violin and
piano "Biliana Platno Beleshe" (Biliana
