Aaron Copland pioneered a new type of American soundby incorporating popular elements of Folk songs and Jazz into his music. His Duo for Flute and Piano (1971), while a relatively late work, echoes the style of his earlier works – drawing from the jazz-inspired works of the 1920’s and his well-known American folk-inspired ballet scores of the 1940s, including Rodeo (1942) and Appalachian Spring (1944). Dedicated to the distinguished American flutist, William Kincaid (1895-1967) who played with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Duo for Flute and Piano was especially commissioned by several of Kincaid’s former pupils.       Catherine Gregory
