Danzas Argentinas, Op. 2 (1937)                   Alberto Ginastera

Danza del Viejo boyero; Danza de la moza donosa; Danza del gaucho matrero

The three Argentinean Dances are a composition by nationalist composer Alberto Evaristo Ginastera. In the first "Dance of the Old Herdsman," the bi-tonality is demonstrated by right hand playing all white notes while left plays all black. The dance ends with the chord E-A-D-G-B-E, the open guitar strings, which is said to be Ginastera's favorite chord. "Dance of the Beautiful Maiden" is a sensual dance in 6/8-time. The sweet melody weaves in between frequent tri-tones in the rocking left-hand accompaniment. The cycle ends with "Dance of the Arrogant Cowboy," which is marked by the composer as furiosamente ("furiously"), violente ("violent"), and salvaggio ("wild").   Stephanie Shih-yu Cheng
