Alberto Ginastera’s Piano Sonata No. 1 earned him great recognition and has since remained a hallmark of the 20th Century piano repertoire. As with other works of this period, Ginastera infused traditional abstract forms with driving rhythms, often with irregular beat patterns, as well as guitar “strumming” effects that clearly represent music of his native Argentine folk tradition.

The incisive rhythm of the opening movement Allegro marcato gives way to a whispering Presto Misterioso which fuses rhythmic patterns with an almost ‘twelve-tone’ harmonic flavor. The third movement brings a moment of repose as Ginastera explores sonorities and timbral effects of the different registers. The rhythmic fervor of the work’s outset returns in the finale: a boisterous, exuberant dance that brings the work to an exciting close.    Henry Wong Doe
