Musician's or Publisher's Notes

The Sonata in B-flat Major is one of a set of three works that Haydn wrote in 1784 when he was composing, producing concerts and operas, as well as in charge of the musical establishment at Esterházy. This sophisticated and gentle-natured sonata has only two movements, and both are at a rather quick tempo. The first of the sonata’s two movements is playful, and good humor and delicacy abound. The second movement is short and bright — not a slow movement, but a graceful finale.                     Notes by Susan Halpern
