In the masterly Pavane, Enescu seems to pluck us out of the dimension of time. Metre and rhythm are hardly given and almost disappear, a beguilingly subtle pulse appearing. Through the trills and embellishments of the flute part, Enescu abducts us to the most intimate places in his soul: ‘… and from far, very far away, there sounds the flute of a lonely shepherd. Yes, that is the picture of my homeland I carry with me everywhere’.
