Concertpiece          Georges Enesco

Renowned as a violinist, conductor, and composer, Georges Enesco was an enormous musical talent of the early twentieth century whose influence brought the music of his Romanian homeland to the attention of European audiences.  Enesco studied in Vienna and Paris under the tutelage of Fauré and Massenet. He loved composition, but was hailed primarily as a virtuoso violinist who taught Menuhin, Grumiaux, and Gitlis. Enesco's output includes five symphonies, concertos and orchestral works, and various chamber and piano solo works.

Concertpiece for viola and piano is an early work, written when he was twenty-five years old. It showcases his exuberant style with a definite French underpinning, full of shifting harmonies, Debussy-like arabesques, and rapid tempo modulations.     Eric Nowlin
