Arpeggione Sonata          Franz Schubert

Transcribed for Double Bass

Allegro Moderato -- Adagio -- Allegretto

Schubert was not one to draw attention to his compositional genius, thus many of his works were discovered posthumously- as in the case of the Arpeggione Sonata. By the time the sonata was found, the instrument called the arpeggione for which it was written was no longer played. The piece is often played on cello and viola; however, since the original instrument for which it was written is long since extinct, the piece is somewhat of a free-for-all. Thus, the piece is as much a bass player's as anyone else's! The double bass's depth of tone gives a wonderfully sonorous quality to the music that coincides naturally with its flow.       Nicholas Santangelo Schwartz
