Concerto No. 2 in G Major, BWV
973 Johann
Sebastian Bach
I.
Allegro; II. Largo; III. Allegro
The second piece on our program is one of the nineteen keyboard
arrangements of Italian concertos that Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) did
early in his career. This concerto was composed for the violin by Antonio
Vivaldi although Bach rearranges and expands much of the original material to
better suit the solo keyboard medium. The first and third movements are
particularly virtuosic in their fast figurations and quick textural changes.
Bach also demonstrates his gift for long ornamented melodies, especially during
the lyrical second movement. Michael Tsalka
