In addition to an illustrious career as a pianist in Europe and America, Myra Hess garnered much attention during World War II from her organization of over 1700 lunchtime concerts at the National Gallery in London. Spanning six years, these concerts were aimed at maintaining the morale of the London populace during the war. In honor of her birthday celebration (February 25), this program opens with Dame Myra’s well-known arrangement of Bach’s Chorale from Cantata No. 147: Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.
